Working With My Dentist

A few years ago, I realized that I was thinking about dental care all wrong. Instead of listening carefully to my dentist and making the necessary changes, I assumed that he was ultimately responsible for making sure that my teeth stayed healthy. Unfortunately, I developed a few serious cavities because I failed to properly brush and floss my teeth, and I knew that it was my fault. I decided to start taking notes at my dental checkups and carefully abiding by the dentist's orders. The difference was almost miraculous. This blog is all about working with your dentist to improve your result.

When Is It Time To Go To The Emergency Dentist

Siiri Puro

Making an unscheduled trip to the dentist can be irritating, especially if you tend to have a very busy schedule. However, in some cases, a trip to the emergency dentist is simply something that you need to make time for. Otherwise, you could be in for a lot of dental trouble. Here are some clues that it is time for you to go to the emergency dentist:

A Large Filling Just Fell Out

A small filling that is suddenly missing might be something that you can wait to see your regular dentist for, especially if it is not causing you any pain or discomfort. However, the larger the filling, the deeper the hole in your tooth. When large fillings go missing, it is more than likely that you are going to start to experience some intense tooth pain. This is because of the exposed or nearly exposed, nerves are no longer protected. Even if you were not in pain right after the filling came out, you could start to feel that pain at any time.

You Believe You Have An Infected Tooth

If you have allowed a small problem with your tooth go without care for too long, an infection may have developed. Then, when that infection is allowed to brew, grow, and spread, you can become extremely ill and could even end up admitted to the hospital. In order to avoid all of that, you will need to make sure that you are seeing an emergency dentist as soon as you suspect that you may have an infected tooth. The emergency dentist will examine your tooth, officially diagnose the problem, and provide the proper treatment. This may result in the pulling of the tooth if it has decayed past the point of being able to repair it. You may most likely need a prescription for antibiotics as well.

You Are Managing Tooth Pain For More Than A Few Days

Random tooth pain that comes and goes may be able to wait to be seen by your regular dentist as soon as he or she can fit you into the schedule. However, if you are experiencing serious pain that you are not getting much relief from after a few days, you may want to consult with an emergency dentist. You do not want to have to rely on pain medication in order to simply get through the day and you certainly do not want to risk the pain getting much worse.

If you are experiencing any of those issues, you will want to head straight to the emergency dentist. Call ahead of time if they require appointments or find one that will accept walk-ins. Just make sure that you are not putting this off because you do not want to experience the pain that can result from waiting too long for emergency dental care.
